Denise Chisholm's sector and factor perspectives – November 14, 2024
Wednesday Nov 20, 2024
Wednesday Nov 20, 2024
Today on the show Denise Chisholm, Director of Quantitative Market Strategy touches on key themes after the Federal Reserve announced a rate cut of 25 basis points. Denise says investors should focus on growth. They should prioritize growth metrics, such as earnings and wage growth, over rate or inflation movements when making investment decisions. The recent rate cut is not lowering yields, but instead are making them rise. Denise says this is a sign of a resilient market, as Historical patterns suggest that rising long-term yields, when linked to growth, are not a threat to equity markets.

November 2024 fixed income headlines – Jeff Moore
Wednesday Nov 13, 2024
Wednesday Nov 13, 2024
We connect with portfolio manager Jeff Moore to get his thoughts on the US elections, the impending rate cute announcement by the Fed and how both events could potentially affect the markets. Jeff says the market stability hinges on timely election results in the bond and stock markets. He says investors should maintain existing trades and add the main stabilizer of the bond markets will depend on if there are clear cut election results. Jeff says there is a high likelihood that the current government debt will prompt higher taxes, cause spending cuts, and potentially both higher taxes and spending cuts could occur. No matter the result, the election is expected to bring stability as markets revert to usual trends post-certification. Jeff says it’s important to continue to focus on inflation, employment, and GDP growth, and shaping monetary policy and rates.

ETF strategies for the fourth quarter – Vince Kraljevic
Tuesday Nov 12, 2024
Tuesday Nov 12, 2024
In today’s episode, Vince Kraljevic joins us to discuss ETF strategies for the fourth quarter, highlighting common misconceptions about ETFs, and how active management is reshaping this space. Vince talks about how falling interest rates could boost small and mid-cap stocks, with his team screening smaller companies for hidden opportunities within the Russell 1000. With a quality focused approach, the fund prioritizes financially sound companies with sustainable business models, helping mitigate risks in rising rate environments. In passive ETFs, there’s a concentration risk around the major tech players. Vince details how active ETF strategies rebalance to avoid overexposure to these stocks, instead focusing on factors like value, quality, and low volatility. Vince also explains that Canada is at the forefront of active ETFS – with 40% actively managed versus only 5% in the U.S. These active ETFs aim to diversify holdings, helping investors avoid concentration risk often associated with passive investing. He closes off by talking about how the fund is currently integrating AI and sector trends – such as renewable energy - by adjusting allocation to capture stable growth areas like industrials, utilities, and energy infrastructure.

On today’s show we’ll hear portfolio manager Connor Gordon’s VISION sit-down with host Glen Davidson, to discuss the investment strategy behind Fidelity Global Small Cap Opportunities Fund, and how investors could benefit from investing in this space. Connor manages the fund alongside portfolio manager Chris Maludzinski. Today's uncertain marketplace has highlighted the importance of investing in high-quality names, characterized by sound balance sheet structures that enable companies to weather more challenging environments. Although some investors correlate high-quality names with large cap companies, that isn’t necessarily true. The small cap space consists of several high-quality businesses with tremendous growth potential. In September 2022, Fidelity launched Global Small Cap Opportunities Fund, which aims to uncover value by identifying high quality companies that are mispriced. Connor reflects on how the fund has performed since launch, including the looking at the current investment landscape. Also, how a stock is researched and selected to be apart of this high-conviction portfolio of typically 40–80 small cap companies anywhere in the world.
