Jurrien Timmer's global macro view – March 11, 2024
Friday Mar 15, 2024
Friday Mar 15, 2024
Today on the show, Director of Global Macro Jurrien Timmer covers recent market trends, Q4, earnings, P/E ratios and the Fed. In terms of a soft landing, inflation and the Fed Jurrien explains the market has been betting on a soft landing, and so far, this has been correct. And he adds several pillars support the soft-landing thesis. During COVID, the labor market tightened significantly, with job openings outweighing job seekers at historic levels. Despite a subsequent softening in labor market conditions, the drawdown in excess labor demand has not led to a recession. This drawdown, combined with a decrease in inflation, allows for an economic softening without a recession. Jurrien says despite the influence of inflation, the fundamentals remain solid, indicating overall resilience in the market. In the US, wage growth now surpasses inflation, which is a positive development for consumers. Jurrien also speaks about Bitcoin and gold saying that he doesn’t believe the bitcoin rally will continue but does see it a viable asset in the long-term. As always, Jurrien shares his charts so please go to @TimmerFidelity on Twitter to follow along. And don’t forget Fidelity Canada’s VP of Product Andrew Clee will be back for his second Reddit AMA talking all about bitcoin and his thoughts on the markets. Submit your questions by March 20th and Andrew will answer them on March 21st.

Today on the show, long time portfolio manager Dan Dupont joins the program to discuss his current investment strategy, gives an update on Canadian Large Cap Fund, and where he’s seeing opportunities in 2024. He says the concentration in his fund is primarily focused in the tech sector, especially in the Magnificent 7, which is trading at historically high levels. He’s also shifting his investment strategy towards overlooked areas like large cap, healthcare, staples, and Chinese markets. But he adds he’s cautiously investing in China due to significantly reduced valuations compared to the past. He’s also looking at investment opportunities in Japan, South Korea, and other regions. With Canadian Large Cap fund, he says the fund tends to excel during periods of volatility, showcasing its ability to weather downturns effectively. To add to this, historically, the large cap fund has demonstrated a downside capture averaging around 34 to 35%, indicating relatively low susceptibility to market downturns.

Jurrien Timmer’s global macro view – March 4, 2024
Saturday Mar 09, 2024
Saturday Mar 09, 2024
Today we welcome back Director of Global Macro Jurrien Timmer for his weekly perspective on the markets. Jurrien discusses his outlook on equity risk premium, small caps, emerging markets, fed policy and many more. Jurrien comments on current market dynamic shifts saying the transition from the late-cycle to the mid-cycle is evident, characterized by robust earnings rebound and an ongoing soft-landing phase, which bolsters bullish market sentiment. He adds new bull markets are typically driven by valuation initially, with prices advancing ahead of earnings, which then follow in subsequent quarters. Jurrien touches on ERP – equity risk premium. Analyzing the current market scenario, the market is currently trading at around 21 times forward earnings, indicating a relatively high valuation. This low ERP suggests heightened market sentiment and valuation, with the market anticipating future earnings expansion. But it also indicates a limited margin for error in the market's pricing, leaving it vulnerable to economic downturns or unforeseen shocks.

A tactical approach to fixed income investing – Adam Kramer and Scott Mensi
Wednesday Mar 06, 2024
Wednesday Mar 06, 2024
Today on the show, we welcome Portfolio Manager Adam Kramer and Institutional Portfolio Manager Scott Mensi. They discuss their tactical approach to fixed income investing, and where they are finding new investment opportunities in today’s markets. Adam and Scott provide a tactical high income portfolio overview, explaining that the fund intends to provide a level of income that exceeds that of traditional balanced funds. It also allows investors to identify the most promising risk-adjusted opportunities by leaving asset allocation decisions to an experienced team, making it a favourable structure for investors today. Kramer and Mensi say there are areas within the marketplace that are attractive which include opportunities in high-yield bonds, convertible bonds, foreign bank debt and floating rate preferred shares. There is also potential in various equity sectors such as large-cap dividend players in the energy and gold mining industries, in addition to a few value names in small and mid-cap sectors. The importance of both proper income-to-risk matching and seeking assets with favourable risk-reward profiles are emphasized when looking for opportunities.

Long/short strategies for 2024 – Brett Dley
Tuesday Mar 05, 2024
Tuesday Mar 05, 2024
Today on the show, we welcome Brett Dley, Portfolio Manager of the Fidelity Market Neutral Alternative Fund. He explains how a long/short investing strategy may be successful in periods of volatility, and where he sees opportunities in 2024. Brett describes market-neutral alternative funds as an equity-based fund without any correlation to separate underlying assets. It operates by concurrently buying one stock and shortening another to maintain a net exposure of zero, and engages in approximately 35 to 40 pair trades. This allows it to create long and short positions to focus on stock-specific differences. Brett discusses the fund’s role for investors approaching retirement and its emphasis on reducing portfolio volatility. He adds by incorporating an investment with lower volatility, investors can potentially navigate market fluctuations more comfortably and prevent impulsive selling decisions during downturns. He also says in the current macro environment, the fund is specifically deployed in response to market conditions and is positioned to mitigate potential downside in a frothy market.

Exploring fixed income markets - Michael Plage
Monday Mar 04, 2024
Monday Mar 04, 2024
Today on the show, we welcome Portfolio Manager Michael Plage to share his perspectives on today’s fixed income markets, and provide an update on Fidelity Multi-Sector Bond Fund. Michael gives us a quick fixed income overview, explaining that the diversification between stocks and bonds has been surprisingly positive, but likely will not last due to the Fed’s actions. Negative correlation between stocks and bonds can be detected through events like the regional bank crisis or geopolitical tensions, but this trend is believed to be advantageous in a few ways. It benefits bond portfolios during shocks to the equity market, and will be helpful to the bond market and holders of bonds within diversified portfolios. Michael believes mortgage-backed securities and corporate bonds are essential to the portfolio strategy, stating that agency mortgages constitute around 30% of the US investment-grade bond market. Currently multi-sector bonds are not particularly favoured due to tight trading and negative convexity, although certain areas within asset-backed securities like aircraft securitization have appeal.

Jurrien Timmer’s global macro view – February 26, 2024
Thursday Feb 29, 2024
Thursday Feb 29, 2024
Today on the program we welcome Director of Global Macro Jurrien Timmer for his weekly commentary on the markets and what macro themes are moving the markets. In this episode Jurrien talks about bitcoin, valuation versus growth, earnings and the tech bubble. Jurrien talks about bitcoin’s endurance and uniqueness and its maturity. He touches on the impact of tech companies and says this tech bubble doesn’t resemble bubbles of the past. In the early 70s and late 90s, the premium of the top 50 stocks over the bottom 450 in terms of P/E ratio was close to 100%. In other words, the P/E was twice as high on those stocks. Today we are at 30%In terms of inflation Jurrien says there are concerns reaching the 2% target. Looking at long-term inflation rate of change, the 5-year rate has gone from 2 to 3, but to reach the 2% mark, year-over-year marks must dip below 2 to reach that target.

The Fed, inflation, and earnings through a fixed income lens – Beau Coash
Monday Feb 26, 2024
Monday Feb 26, 2024
Today on the show, we welcome Institutional Portfolio Manager Beau Coash. He discusses about the expectations surrounding inflation, the similarities and differences about Canada compared to the 2008 financial crisis in the United States, and much more. Beau explains how the US was able to add over 150 thousand jobs than what was initially anticipated. Major reasons for this included the opportunity for selective security investment which notes stabilization in the “big seven” companies, as well as significant productivity improvement expectations from them. NVIDIA is currently highlighted for its potential influence in the semiconductor industry, and other companies within that space will make an impact with NVIDIA as its centrepiece. Beau speaks on how the Federal Reserve’s goal for inflation remains to get down to 2%, with the current progress to doing so being confusing. The Reserve prefers to use the Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation metric which currently indicates movement towards the 2% target, but the consumer price index hovers around 3.1 or 3.5%, a significantly higher figure.

Healthcare in 2024 – Alex Gold
Saturday Feb 24, 2024
Saturday Feb 24, 2024
Today on the show, we welcome Portfolio Manager Alex Gold. He discusses his outlook for the global health care sector in 2024, and the themes he’s watching this year. Alex shares that a major theme he has seen so far in the year is increased utilization of hospital services. This differs from a few years prior, where many were hesitant to check into hospitals during the majority of Covid-19. Last year healthcare was among the worst performing S&P subsectors, although the global market is expected to jump from 750 million people to around one and half billion. Because of this, Alex believes there is an opportunity to invest in healthcare’s long term structural growth. Alex also notes that the subsidies on the stage of valuations is another huge healthcare theme, primarily due to the major Nordic drug companies that are connected to weight loss products.

Denise Chisholm's sector and factor perspectives – January 29, 2024
Friday Feb 23, 2024
Friday Feb 23, 2024
Today on the show, we welcome Director of Quantitative Market Strategy Denise Chisholm. She brings her unique insights and perspectives on the sectors to watch in global markets. Denise dives into the yield curve inversion and assures that it does not necessarily indicate an immediate recession as proven by the inversion in 1966. It is more the steepening of the inversion that causes issues for the equity market than the inversion itself, and half of the time there comes a recalibration of monetary policy. The current 6-month run rate of the PCE deflator has dropped to below 2%, and the price level remains 20% higher than it was before the start of Covid-19. Inflation has slowed down to the measure the Federal Reserve prefers.Denise discusses the current rate drops and how that could lead to risk assets from more economically sensitive sectors improving.

Don has held several senior roles at the Federal Department of Finance, including Associate Deputy Minister, where he was responsible for economic analysis, and fiscal and tax policies. Today, Don comments on the latest Bank of Canada announcement, possible rate cuts, the housing market and rental pressure. Don says the Bank believes in a model where creating slack in the economy will, over time, reduce inflation. The BoC also expressed confidence in its strategy, indicating that the first step of creating slack in the economy has been accomplished. But Don points out the market tends to anticipate economic changes, positioning itself in advance. He says the clock for these changes has just started, whereas people initiated this countdown a year or two earlier.
