Analyst perspectives: Banks and the consumer – Brendan Cochrane and Thomas Goldthorpe
Wednesday May 29, 2024
Wednesday May 29, 2024
Canada and the U.S. share many commonalities. Cultural influences, social values, and democratic political systems, to name a few. But the gap between the two countries has widened when it comes to the health of the consumer. Thomas Goldthorpe, portfolio manager, and Brendan Cochrane, equity research analyst, are today’s guests, joining host Pamela Ritchie. They’ll unpack the health of the consumer in both countries, including why U.S. is showing signs of recovery while Canada’s trade down continues to grow. Also, what implications does this have for Canadian investors? And where could they look for winning investment opportunities in this environment? We’ll hear how Thomas and Brendan believe that while the current situation is not ideal for Canadian consumers, few companies are completely exposed to them. And that in any sector, there are lots of companies that have different exposures and benefit from different types of economies, which presents an opportunity to create differentiated returns within a portfolio. They say there are lots of opportunities in the Canadian consumer space, and they just have to focus on the long-run potential instead of current positions.

Unpacking the 2024 Fidelity Retirement Report – Peter Bowen and Michelle Munro
Tuesday May 28, 2024
Tuesday May 28, 2024
Today on the show, we highlight the 2024 Fidelity Retirement Report and its findings on how Canadians are viewing and preparing for retirement. Host Glen Davidson sits down with Peter Bowen, VP of Tax and Retirement Research and Michelle Munro Director of Tax and Retirement Research, as they break down the perspectives, challenges, and trends of pre-retirees and retirees. Peter notes the survey noted many pre-retirees are delaying retirement - delaying beyond 65 or in some cases not even considering retiring at all. In addition, Michelle points out women view retirement more negatively than men. Peter breaks down the impact of the recent capital gains inclusion rate changes saying it will affect those with second properties like vacation homes, but also those with incorporated businesses. Peter says be sure to connect with your financial planner to figure out the best course of action before the changes come into effect in June of this year. They also stress the importance of having a written financial plan that addresses each of your financial goals - 88 percent of Canadians surveyed say they feel financially prepared for retirement with a written plan compared to 56 percent without one who do not feel prepared.

Monday May 27, 2024
Today we welcome special guest Laura Tamblyn-Watts, CEO of CanAge and Author of “Let’s Talk about Aging Parents: A Real-Life Guide to Solving Problems with 27 Essential Conversations” . Laura tackles the topic of an aging population, how it could impact the financial advisor community and discusses other aging and generational trends and issues. Twenty years from now, about 1 in 4 Canadians will be 65 years or older. Canadians are living longer, and the sandwich generation is very prevalent these days where people are taking care of their parents, grandparents while also caring for their own kids. Laura notes the importance of having those crucial conversations with your aging loved ones about their finances, living situations and any medical issues. Financial advisors can help their aging clientele by preparing the family with any “what if” scenarios, possibly financial scams, establishing executors and helping prevent family arguments before they begin.

Denise Chisholm's sector and factor perspectives – May 9, 2024
Saturday May 25, 2024
Saturday May 25, 2024
As US equity markets slide, we check in with Denise Chisholm, Director of Quantitative Market Strategy, to get her thoughts on international equities and other opportunities. With Europe most likely looking to cut rates earlier than the US, does this make a strong case for international equities? Denise says not necessarily. Even though European and international assets are cheaper than North America, Denise stresses the importance of growth. International equities have always been cheaper, but lack growth. She adds investing outside of the US has worse growth compared to the US in every cycle historically. Denise talks about the mining and metals sector and says it’s negatively skewed right now. She’s underweight mining and metals as well as healthcare. She says healthcare companies are no longer considered growth, but rather ex-growth and looking like a value trap. She adds defensive sectors are all looking like value traps at the moment.

Today on the show, we are joined by special guest Danielle LeClair. Danielle is the Director of Manager Research at Morningstar Canada. Morningstar has been providing ratings to help investors find top-performing ETFs and Mutual Funds since 1985. Danielle deep dives into Morningstar’s methods and processes when it comes to determining star and medalist ratings. She also explains the importance of having a Canadian research team on the ground. Danielle explains how Canada is a different market with different nuances. She says the team can adapt global methodologies to suit Canadian market’s nuances, such as regulatory differences and currency considerations. Danielle also explains how Morningstar determines qualitative ratings. She says it’s based on three pillars – people, process and parent. Price is also factored into the rating and is evaluated relative to similar funds, as well as passive index funds because they are a competitor to active management. With medalist ratings, Danielle says the team analyze both quantitative and qualitative aspects of a fund and compares relative to peers.

Thursday May 23, 2024
On April 18 and 19 Fidelity Investments Canada hosted FOCUS 2024, a two-day event for advisors, featuring insights from Fidelity’s portfolio managers and subject matter experts. Today we’ll hear portfolio manager Salim Hart’s FOCUS session, sitting down for a discussion on-stage with host Glen Davidson. Salim is known to Canadian investors as co-portfolio manager on Fidelity Global Intrinsic Value, working alongside Sam Chamovitz and Morgen Peck. And today, in addition to speaking with Glen about the team’s approach to Global Intrinsic Value, he’ll also share the strategy behind a new fund – Fidelity Global Micro-Cap Fund, launched on May 22. Because of how often micro-cap companies may be overlooked, the the micro-cap universe represents one of the least efficient asset classes available to investors. At Fidelity there is no rock too small, and today’s micro-caps could become the large caps of the future, so there’s significant upside potential to getting in on the ground floor.

Eye on Europe: Second-quarter investing opportunities – Matt Siddle
Friday May 17, 2024
Friday May 17, 2024
Today on the show, we talk to Matt Siddle, portofilo manager and co-manager of the Fidelity Europe Fund. Matt discusses the recent activity in European markets and where he is seeing investing opportunities in this second quarter. Matt says even though the US market tends to look stronger than the European market, he argues Europe is more attractive on a valuation basis. He says by looking at PE as a measure, Europe has more value options with half of the market below 15 times earnings. US may have better growth stocks but Europe, from a broader perspective, is a better value proposition. Matt also looks ahead to June and discusses what a rate cut would look like if the ECB decides to cut. He says if this is a mid-cycle rotation and rates can come down without economic damage, this would be positive for markets. But if rate cuts are induced in response to a weakening market, which is not the current market sentiment, owning deep cyclicals would not be a good investment. Matt suggests early cyclicals, consumer and defensive stocks would be the better investment. Matt also compares the banking story across many European countries and touches on China and India’s export story and its impact on Europe.

Unpacking the Fed's May 2024 rate decision – Ilan Kolet
Wednesday May 15, 2024
Wednesday May 15, 2024
Today on the show, institutional portfolio manager Ilan Kolet comments on the recent Federal Reserve announcement and what this means for markets and the positioning of the Fidelity’s Global Asset Allocation team. Ilan says what stood out to him in the Fed’s decision to hold rates is that there has been great progress made on inflation, but at the same time, in the last few months inflation has not been cooperative. There have been some lags in inflation indicators, but at this point it hasn’t shown up in the data. Once it does, inflation should move towards the target of 2 percent. Ilan points out the Fed decision doesn’t change much in the team’s positioning. The GAA team are still positioned stubbornly as he puts it for elevated inflation and what they think might be a very rare productivity expansion. Ilan also touches on the 60/40 portfolio, what a mini stagflation means, and compare the US versus Canada economic story.

What you need to know about capital gains – Peter Bowen
Tuesday May 14, 2024
Tuesday May 14, 2024
Today on the show, Peter Bowen, VP of Tax and Retirement Research at Fidelity Canada, breaks down the capital gains changes from the recently released 2024 Federal budget. He explains what the tax changes could mean for your clients and potentially their investment and retirement plans. Peter reviews what changed, including how the capital gains inclusion rate increased from one half to two thirds. He says most individuals won’t be affected, but these tax changes could affect corporations and trusts plus those with second homes, vacation properties and cottages. Peter also breaks down possible steps and scenarios for those affected by the capital gains changes. Those being small and large business owners, even doctors on the small business side. Should you consider selling your investments within your private corporation, or sell your entire portfolio to trigger the capital gains? Peter says the decision depends on the time value of money and if you want to pay taxes early at a lower rate. Either way, he suggests, to sit down with your financial advisor and figure out a plan well before the June 25th deadline.

Harnessing disruption and innovation in 2024 – Mark Schmehl
Monday May 13, 2024
Monday May 13, 2024
Today we welcome long-time Fidelity investor Mark Schmehl to the show. Mark talks about opportunities he’s seeing in technology and AI and what other disruptive trends he’s seeing in the market landscape right now. Mark says his focus is on AI solutions. He says AI solutions are changing the fundamental ways that companies do business. He adds that companies must spend, otherwise, they will be wiped out by competitors that make use of AI. He gives India as an example. On a recent trip there, Mark talks about one company using AI to elevate cosmetics and help sell and market beauty products. Mark is not looking at marco themes or rate cuts and doesn’t believe it’s going to happen. His focus is different, as he puts it - looking “at the best stories in the market.” He emphasizes that his sell discipline has not changed. Mark says he likes to own “winners” , likes to bet large from an allocation basis, and likes to sell things when he gets it wrong. He says he’s talking to CEOs all the time and being based out of San Francisco gets him access to so much information and data, which allows him to paint a picture ultimately resulting in strong investment decisions.

Exploring the digital asset landscape – Chris Kuiper
Sunday May 12, 2024
Sunday May 12, 2024
Today we welcome special guest Chris Kuiper on the show. Chris is Director of Research at Fidelity Digital Assets. He discusses many digital landscape topics and trends including Bitcoin’s recent halving and SEC’s approval on Bitcoin ETPs. Bitcoin’s recent halving event is a process where the new incoming supply of Bitcoin is halved. This process takes place every four years and essentially reduces the reward given to miners for securing the network. Historically, Bitcoin halving usually precedes a surge in Bitcoin pricing, but it can also impact supply dynamics and Bitcoin scarcity. Chris notes despite halving reducing the number of Bitcoin received by miners, the significant increase in Bitcoin’s price over time has more than compensated for the reduction in coins received. Chris also comments on the SEC’s approval of Exchange Traded Products adding that ETPs for Bitcoin have been extraordinarily successful seeing massive inflows totalling over $12 billion in cumulative net flows in US dollars. Assets under management for these US products exceeded $55 billion. He also discusses ethereum’s performance and the rise of newer cryptocurrencies like solana.

Thursday May 09, 2024
Thursday May 09, 2024
Today on the show, we check in with Fidelity’s Director of Quantitative Market Strategy Denise Chisholm and get her thoughts on recent job growth numbers, the Federal reserve’s next possible move, and the impact of current geopolitical risks. Denise dissects recent positive job growth numbers and says if you step back and look at the overall picture, you will see that year-on-year payroll growth or even three to six months back, we are only in the second quartile and the correlation you see in this segment in terms of payroll growth equating to average inflation, is that it is bang on 2% growth. She adds payrolls drive service spending, but is only one piece of the overall CPI puzzle - productivity plays a roll, too. She also comments on the resiliency and advancement of the equity markets suggesting that it is much less dependent on Federal Reserve rate cuts than many investors might think. Denise also touches on how geopolitical risks could affect the market, and what is in her bottom and top sector watch.

Tuesday May 07, 2024
Tuesday May 07, 2024
Today on the show, we take a look around the global markets as we check in with Fidelity International Investment Director Tom Stevenson. With the recent rally of the FTSE 100, UK’s leading stock market index, Tom breaks down what the upswing could mean for European markets and investors. He points out UK's market is currently attractively valued compared to the US, with a price-to-earnings ratio of about 12 compared to 20 in the US. Tom adds the decline in the pound's value benefits UK companies, contributing to the recent rise in the FTSE 100. He adds valuation of the UK stock market is relatively cheap, attracting investors who see potential value despite economic differences with the US. Tom also touches on China’s changing consumer landscape, Japan’s economic activity and his overall thoughts on the UK’s bullish market.
